The spittoon is famous! Chinese netizens:Overnight trip to Amazon stall
Recently, an “enamel fruit basket” sold on US e-commerce platform Amazon has attracted huge attention from Chinese netizens, not only because the product is tagged at a price almost 15 times its regular price in China, but also because the “Chinese traditional antique” sold for dining and fashion is actually used as a spittoon or a chamber pot in China.
From the description page, the enamel product adorned with a pair of mandarin ducks and the Chinese words symbolizing “double happiness” in red was advertised on Amazon as being a Chinese antique with a wide range of uses, from being a vegetable and fruit holder to an ice bucket, or a decorative display stand. It was also recommended as a good gift for housewarmings and weddings, with photos showing it being used to store French loaves, as well as to hold a bottle of wine in ice, placed classily beside a champagne glass on a wooden table.
The post went viral among Chinese netizens, who were amazed and amused to see the various use of a traditional spittoon, and it can be so highly regarded on a US online marketplace. The hashtag “the other ways a spittoon is used” received more than 50 million views of comments on Chinese social platform Sina Weibo as of press time.
Some people see it as a cultural difference that should not be made into a big deal. “It is actually interesting to see how things can be used differently in other cultures. As long as the buyers like it, it shouldn’t matter it is ‘originally’ used for,” said a Weibo user.
Probably we are too familiar with some Chinese traditional design to understand its beauty, the “Chinese traditional antique fruit basket ” is never a single case.
Recent days, brands are releasing their collections for spring/summer 2021. Out of thousands of fashion pieces, some succeeded to catch attention of Chinese netizens.
This “Anagram flap sneakers in canvas” is featured by its contrast vulcanised rubber sole, ribbed toe cap and the Khaki Green color, making them very much look like the “liberation shoes”worn by PLA in the 1960s. only that this pair is from Loewe, and it is priced $450.
Supreme also launched its spring/summer 2021 collection at February 15. Elements like brand logo, celebrity figure, animal grain are integrated into the design of clothes. However, the two jackets below quickly stand out for Chinese viewers. Look at the contrasting red-and-green color combination, typical pattern, and the use of Chinese frogs! If there were not “supreme” scatter among the flower pattern, the jacket would be a perfect coat of north-east China style.
Some netizens on Weibo even photoshopped Kirs Wu, a well-known handsome pop star, to be the model, proving that “even Kris Wu can’t make it right”.
Absence makes heart grow fonder. Maybe that’s why foreigners seem to favor the Chinese style we see as normal, even inappropriate, in some cases. Is it out of date or vintage? Is it vulgar or chic? What do you think?
